July 27, 2019 @ The Triffid chalks up the anniversary and much anticipated return of the band universally known as “QLD’s #1 once a year middle aged charity covers band” The Planktons. After smashing records (for bar sales) at the 2018 show and riding the momentum of four stellar years working the large pubs of Brisbane to sell-out audiences, The Planktons have gained a reputation as a covers act like no other. They’ve grown a dedicated and swelling fan base thanks primarily to their nostalgic set list, twin vocal attack, air-tight rhythm section and thumping guitar sound.
There has never been a night of covers music to rival this bill. Devotees of Aussie music will feast on Planktons tributes to: The Sunnyboys, Hoodoos, Rat Cat, INXS, AC/DC, Mondo Rock and even The Riptides. Great bands from abroad are not ignored either with cracking renditions of hits from: The Only Ones, The Strokes, James, Green Day, Nirvana, The Cure, The Cult and even Martha and her Muffins.
The 2019 set features a new tasty take home ten-pack of top covers too. Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Spiderbait, Bannanarama, Skegss, Hole, The Pixies, Johnny Cash plus more Femmes and Nirvana.
Think it’s just guitar band shtick? No way!
Over the years The Planktons have incorporated an orchestra of side action to fill out and fatten up their sound. Tambo, bongos, slide whistle and bagpipes have all had a run. This year the pipes will be back and don’t be surprised too if you’re feeling a little bit hillbilly later in the night as you receive some deliverance in the form of the banjo.
Even better than the music however is the cause. All proceeds go to charities. In 2019 the headline charity will be the Hummingbird House Foundation.
Now In its fifth year, the annual gig is taking it to a new level by partnering with The Triffid to package an event that fans can enjoy, and feel good about contributing to at the same time. Doors will be opening at 7.00 pm and closing late. It’s an evening chock filled with entertainment and value. Come early to nourish and hydrate, The Triffid always provides ice cold bevvies and a fantastic feast of fine fresh food for the famished.
